台湾《科学人》杂志上的一篇文章讲述了一项广泛应用的中文翻译英文的方法：用Google检索。 例如，马英九说了一句很政治正确的话："任何人都不能以言论自由做为不当行为的保护伞，来挑动族群对立"。Taipei Times把这句话翻译成"Nobody can hide under the umbrella of freedom of speech and engage in improper acts or instigate ethnic conflict"。翻译恰当不恰当可以用Google统计检验：搜索"hide under the umbrella of freedom of speech" -site:tw -site:cn -site:jp -site:kr只有六项搜索结果，可见这种讲法不是英文的习惯说法。换个较普遍的英文讲法"under the pretext"或"on the pretext"查询，分别有422和572项查询结果。因此合理推断比较恰当的英译是"Nobody is allowed to make derogatory remarks under the pretext of freedom of speech"。上述以搜索引擎来验证英文用法的策略，有以下的几个重点。首先，一定用双引号包住想查的词句。很多人查询时不知道加引号，以致声称在 Google上可找到几百万个明显用法错误的例子。譬如，不加引号来查杜撰而不存在的中文"停滞性流动"，竟然还可以查到约有63万5000项查询结果。但加了引号就只剩2项（2009年9月3日的查询结果）。可见如果不用引号的话，出现的统计数字就没意义。Things you can do from here:
